Gary DeVercelly Gary and his wife, Julie, have worked to raise awareness of the dangers of hazing since the death of their oldest son, Gary Jr., as a result of a fraternity hazing ‘ritual’. The DeVercellys, with over 30 trips to Washington, D.C., were the driving force behind the passing of the Stop Campus Hazing Act. They enacted unprecedented change at Rider University, where Gary Jr. was enrolled at the time of his death, revolutionizing the way Rider manages their Greek organizations. In 2014 he and Julie, with Clery Center, produced the award-winning documentary, We Don’t Haze. They speak at high schools and universities across the country about hazing and are recipients of the Edith Surgan Victim Activist Award 2024 for their commitment to promoting rights & services that help change the lives of hazing victims. Gary is self-employed and lives in Long Beach, CA, where he and Julie raised their three children, Gary Jr., Emily, and Noah.
