Institutions of higher education receiving federal financial aid must adhere to the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA). This federal law targets alcohol and drug abuse prevention on college campuses. To comply, colleges must:

  • establish a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program (DAAPP) for students and employees,
  • notify its campus community annually of this program, and
  • conduct a review biennially of the DAAPP’s effectiveness.

For compliance with the Clery Act, institutions must include in their annual security report (ASR):

  • policy statements summarizing institutional standards regarding alcohol and drug abuse and policies for the enforcement of State and Federal laws, and
  • a description of, or a cross-reference to, the components of their DAAPP.

Navigating DFSCA compliance and ASR requirements can be complex. This webinar will clarify DFSCA mandates, related ASR components, and offer best practices for compliance and DAAPP implementation.

 During this webinar we will:

  • Describe the requirements of the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act
  • Review the requirements for establishing a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program
  • Review the annual security report requirements related to the DFSCA and an institution’s DAAPP
  • Explore best practices in navigating DFSCA compliance and maintaining an effective DAAPP

Clery Center is committed to making our training accessible to all participants. English Closed Captioning will be provided and other reasonable accommodations will be considered as requested.

Following the webinar, registrants will receive a link to the webinar recording.

About the Policy to Practice Webinar Series

In our 2024 webinar series, we will examine several requirements of the Clery Act and delve into best practices for effectively addressing these areas. Institutions of higher education are responsible for adhering to the Clery Act, which aims to enhance campus safety and increase transparency regarding campus crime statistics.

While the Clery Act's statutes and regulations outline the necessary actions for campus administrators, they may not always offer specific guidance on implementation. Join us as we dive deeper into policy and provide you with strategies for putting these requirements into practice.
